THEME/

The Intellectual Histories of Arts-Based and Artistic Research

The 6th Conference calls to postgraduate students, teachers, artist, professors and professionals in the arts, education, community and social institutions to present their Arts Based Research and Artistic Research papers/projects.

For our meeting in Vancouver 2019, we will focus on the intellectual histories of Arts-Based and Artistic Research, with a particular attention to the place of arts-based and artistic research within the academy, within research cultures, and within discourses of art and artistic practices.

FORMAT/

A Study-Orientated Symposium

For the 6th Conference on Arts-Based Research and Artistic Research, we will adopt a format that we are calling a study-orientated symposium.

A symposium is typically understood as a formal gathering in an academic environment where participants, who are experts in their fields, gather to (a) offer their scholarly and research-informed perspectives on a chosen theme, topic or issue, (b) discuss these perspectives and (c) make recommendations for future-orientated action. Most typically, a symposium addresses a single topic or issue.

All contributions are framed around that topic, with the intention of developing or advancing a deeper understanding of the topic. We intend to honour this format but extend it by paying particular attention to the importance of studying the ideas offered by presenters. We will devote considerable time to discussion, which will be provoked by short papers and facilitated by discussants.

We anticipate that this format will encourage and support scholarly conversations and discussions on research practices and theoretical orientations of Arts-Based and Artistic Research

TOPICS/

Proposals will address one or more of these broad areas of interest

— The intellectual histories of Arts-Based and Artistic Research

— The place of arts-based and artistic research within the academy

— The place of arts-based and artistic research within the visual arts

— The place of art within art research, and its appearance within artistic research

— The theories that art-researchers work with, turn toward, and utilize in our inquiries

— The historically situated struggles of articulating art’s research potential

MODEL OF PARTICIPATION/

(a) Paper Presentation

Paper Presenters will present short papers (no more than 10 minutes per paper) on a topic or set of ideas related to our focus: intellectual histories of arts-based and artistic research.

(b) Discussant

Discussants will summarize and articulate each paper’s contribution to research, scholarship and thought in arts-based and artistic research. It is expected that discussants will provide audience members with perspectives and insights on each paper, identifying the significance and potential of each paper for the advancement of arts-based and artistic research. Discussants will draw upon their research and scholarly expertise in offering comments on each paper, as they highlight key ideas contained in each one. Discussants will facilitate discussion and engagement from the audience. To assist discussants in the preparation of their remarks, papers will be made available to them one month in advance of the symposium.
